Soul City Manifesto Tote Bag
Soul City was an early 70s experiment in creating a black utopia in rural North Carolina. It failed. Growing up only a couple of miles from Soul City, I often thought of what it could've been had really succeeded in its intention. This bag is a tribute to those efforts and to a community that still lives on.
This tote bag is double sided. One side features an image (by Brooks El) re-colorized by myself that was printed on the program of the community's groundbreaking in 1973. The back side highlights the manifesto of sorts that accompanied that image (in all its grammatically challenging glory).
